After a few weeks of summer holidays, our students enjoyed vacation bible school with a new mission team from Resurrection Church, in St Louis, Missouri.
This team, which planned their trip with the assistance of the Belize Mission Society, an organization that takes inspiration from Philippians 2:4 “Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand,” did just that when interacting with the Holy Cross students.
The Resurrection volunteers came fully prepared with everything they needed to conduct a full Vacation Bible School. They arrived at Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon along with the team from St. John’s Barrington, RI for a brief orientation and then walked through the San Mateo community handing out flyers to invite the children to the VBS scheduled for the following 4 days. On Monday morning a group of these same volunteers went back into San Mateo to again extend the invitation.
Our students had a wonderful time acting out bible stories, doing crafts, playing games and worshiping God. Following lunch provided by the team the volunteers set up games, toys, crafts and coloring stations. The students and volunteers really enjoyed hanging out together for a couple of hours each day. And, the students couldn’t wait to return the next day!
The topics covered were very relatable to our students. Many have seen homes subside due to faulty foundations, so they really understood the story of the wise man who built his house on the rock and the foolish man who built on the sand. With our fishing background and being vulnerable to hurricanes, the story of Jesus calming the storm definitely carried extra weight.
Throughout the week strong bonds were forged between students and volunteers. This team touched lives in ways that go far beyond the scope of conducting a VBS, making each student feel special. We are very grateful for the love shared. Thank you for putting on a fun and interesting vacation bible school.
